It should come as a surprise to no one that the cities within the United States that are closest to busy sea ports appear near the top of the list of the top 10 American cities that dominate as global trading centers. To this end, Long Beach and Los Angeles along with Port Newark in New Jersey and Red Hook in New York will likely to continue to hold onto a big share of the port-related trading activity going forward. Other U.S. cities showing up on the list (for the same reason) are Norfolk, Virginia, Charleston, and Savannah, Georgia.

Another way of getting onto this list is to be a city that happens to be the headquarters of the world’s biggest airfreight carrier, and that means Memphis – home of “FedEx” makes the onto the list. A major overhaul of legacy surface and rail freight hubs in the Mid-West makes the case that cities like Chicago with its highly developed system of multimodal connections belongs on the list.

Globalization combined with high-speed Internet communications technology levels the playing field for everyone participating in the exciting business of global trade. Getting your goods into the most rapidly growing consumer markets in today’s world is the main goal of the modern entrepreneur, and that goal can only be attained when he has a good understanding of how things are supposed to get where they need to be on time. Therefore, the lesson is that if there is one thing that the top ten cities on this list are good at, it is logistics.
